Supporting Local Healthcare in Wyndham: Building a Healthier Future

Australia has one of the world’s strongest public healthcare systems, but in a rapidly growing community like Wyndham, access to quality healthcare close to home has never been more important.

For more than three decades, Wyndham Health Foundation has worked alongside the local community to support healthcare and better health outcomes across Wyndham and Werribee in Melbourne’s west.

Behind every program, partnership and fundraising initiative are real people and real stories that remind us why local healthcare matters, and what can be achieved when a community comes together.

Why Local Healthcare Matters in Wyndham

For individuals and families, being able to access healthcare close to home can make an enormous difference.

Not everyone can easily travel outside the area for appointments, treatment or ongoing support. For families dealing with illness or unexpected health challenges, local services can also help them remain closer to family, friends and the community networks that support them.

For Wyndham Health Foundation CEO Christine Medrano, the importance of healthcare and the support surrounding families during times of illness is deeply personal.

Christine’s daughter was just 12 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer.

“It was one of those gut-wrenching moments. You have your health and then one moment you don’t.”

Christine recalls it as an incredibly difficult time for her family, and one in which the care and support they received became invaluable.

“Going back to that time, the only thing that sort of kept me alive was the nursing staff and the hospital.”

Her family relied not only on the health system, but also on social and mental health support as they navigated their daughter’s illness.

Today, Christine’s daughter is 22, studying at university and doing well.

That experience has given Christine a deeply personal understanding of the importance of healthcare and the network of services that surround individuals and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

It also underpins her belief in the work of Wyndham Health Foundation.

“I wouldn’t be here and do this if I didn’t truly believe in what I was doing, and I believe in the work we’re doing.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that healthcare is about much more than buildings and equipment. It is about people, families and having the right care and support available when life changes unexpectedly.

Growing Alongside the Wyndham Community

The story behind Wyndham Health Foundation stretches back to 1993, when members of the local community recognised that Wyndham’s growth was creating increasing demand for healthcare services.

Community members rallied to help provide equipment and support for local hospital services, helping lay the foundations for what would become Wyndham Health Foundation.

As Wyndham has grown, the Foundation has grown with it.

Our focus has evolved from supporting the public hospital system to considering broader public health needs and health outcomes across the community.

Today, funds are raised through community events, corporate partnerships, sponsorships and generous donors, helping us support health and wellbeing initiatives here in our local community.

Supporting Families at Werribee Mercy Hospital

Community support can translate into meaningful local impact.

One example was $85,000 in funding provided to Werribee Mercy Hospital to support technology assisting expectant mothers managing gestational diabetes.

Wyndham Health Foundation has also provided funding for a range of maternity initiatives and continues to identify opportunities where community support can respond to local health needs.

But making a difference isn’t measured only in dollars.

Each year, our Christmas gift-giving initiative brings volunteers and community members together to donate and wrap presents for children at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

For our volunteers, activities such as wrapping presents, selling raffle tickets or helping at community fundraising events are opportunities to give something back.

“I just love to feel like I can help someone. If there’s something to help someone, it’s a good feeling.”

It captures something that has always been important to the Foundation: local people helping local people.

Identifying Community Health Needs Across Wyndham

Deciding where funding can make a meaningful difference requires careful consideration.

We look at public health outcomes and health data alongside government priorities, feedback from healthcare providers and what the local community is telling us it needs.

Potential programs and initiatives are assessed and due diligence undertaken before funding is directed towards identified areas of need.

Our Board is made up entirely of local residents, providing a strong understanding of the community while maintaining connections with healthcare providers, community organisations, government representatives and other groups working throughout the region.

These local connections help us better understand emerging health needs and where community funding can have an impact.

Community Support Creates Local Impact

Improving community health isn’t something one organisation can achieve alone.

Wyndham Health Foundation relies on the generosity and involvement of donors, corporate partners, sponsors, volunteers and community members.

Every donation, partnership, fundraising event and volunteer contribution strengthens our ability to support health initiatives locally.

For businesses and organisations, partnering with Wyndham Health Foundation provides an opportunity to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community where their employees, customers and families live and work.

Building a Healthier Future for Melbourne’s West

As the population of Melbourne’s west continues to grow, so too will the health and wellbeing needs of our community.

Our vision is to continue growing our education activities, team, volunteer network and community partnerships so Wyndham Health Foundation can continue responding to the changing needs of our city.

Greater community and corporate support gives us greater capacity to invest in local health initiatives, support access to healthcare and contribute to better health outcomes.

Because ultimately, a healthier Wyndham benefits us all.

A healthier Wyndham means a healthier future for us all.
