Dialysis keeps people with end stage kidney disease alive, but involves long hours tethered to a hospital chair several times a week.

Werribee Hospital’s Renal Dialysis Unit supports hundreds of local people each year, providing chronic haemodialysis for patients with end-stage kidney failure. The hospital currently has 12 dialysis chairs to serve Melbourne’s entire Western Suburbs – everyone of which is in heavy use.

We’d like to improve the patient experience by replacing as many of chairs as possible. Each new dialysis chair costs $5,954. That’s 100 people giving around $60 each. Can you help with a gift before June 30?

JIM’S STORY
Five years ago, Jim started to experience blurred vision – more intense and disorientating as it progressed. It got so bad one night Jim ended up at Werribee Hospital’s Casualty Department. It was a shock when he was admitted to the Renal Ward – he thought he had something wrong with his eyes.

“My blood pressure was a bit high, but I had no idea this was linked to kidney function. I guess, like a lot of people, I only had the vaguest notion of where your kidneys are and what they do. But like my life since being diagnosed with end stage kidney disease, that’s all changed now.”

Now 62, Jim is on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. In the meantime, he has dialysis at Werribee Hospital several times each week, with a long spell in a dialysis chair every time. But this treatment is keeping Jim alive and relatively well, and for that, he’s grateful.

“If I have to be on dialysis, I’m glad I’m on dialysis at Werribee Hospital. Where the nurses really care and take the time to get to know you. Being here several times a week, for two plus hours each time, this adds up and matters a lot more than you’d think. Seeing friendly faces, and feeling like I’m part of a community, it helps get me through. I’m alive and hopeful today because of Werribee Hospital’s Renal Unit.”

I’m reaching out to you to ask you to please consider making a donation to Werribee Hospital Foundation before June 30.  100% of all donations are disbursed to Werribee Mercy Hospital and gifts over $2 are tax-deductible, but more importantly each gift will make a big difference in the lives of the patients that are looked after in the hospital’s Renal Unit each year.

Please help Werribee Hospital Foundation continue to support critical health services in a quality care environment with a small donation today.
